Healthy Ideas for Vacationers

By: Rackel Lukasavige

I know it is not always easy to be healthy when you are on vacation, especially when you get out of your regular routine and would rather lie at the pool or on the beach than spend time in a gym. It is also difficult to find healthy options at restaurants when you have to eat out for every single meal. I recently returned from vacation where I discovered it is possible to maintain some semblance of health if you get creative.

It might sound silly, but start your vacation off right by packing yourself a lunch or dinner for the plane ride. Airlines do not offer the healthiest choices and this way you will not be stuck having to make a decision between the restaurants in the airport. Plus, by eating a nutritious meal you are less likely to be hungry when you get off the plane and will not eat impulsively.

Take advantage of the gym in your hotel. If you do not have a gym membership, this is your opportunity to use free weights and machines that can tone up your body. Or, if you are vacationing in a city with warm weather get outside and walk. Many people underestimate the value of walking. Do not forget to count all of the walking you do while sight seeing because that is exercise too.

If your hotel offers a continental breakfast, make healthy choices. Stay away from pastries which are common sources for Trans-fats. Instead, load up on fruit, whole grains, and a small portion of eggs for protein. Take extra fruit like apples and bananas with you to snack on later.

Ask for a refrigerator for your room and bring leftovers back with you to eat for lunch the next day. By doing so, you will save money and calories. Most restaurant portions are three to four servings, which is much more than you need to eat anyway.

The most important thing to remember about vacations is that they are not an excuse to forgo eating healthy and exercising. The people who are most successful with keeping weight off know that making changes is a lifetime commitment, even while they are on vacation.
